Florals for Spring, Groundbreaking.... Rose Cardamom Jam Cookies to Elevate Your Mood

It’s time for another herbal infused cookie and I am so in love with this one! I recently did some juniper and caraway seed cookies and along that style wanted to do a sandwich cookie with some jam! I wanted to go a little more floral for this cookie with spring starting and it getting warmer out. I have a lot of rose and have really been into it lately so I figured that would be a great place to start!

I totally get where people can get afraid of a flavor like rose. It is very aromatic and can easily taste like a perfume, but it has multiple benefits so adding it into some food can be great if you can balance it. Rose petals contain a lot of antioxidants. Just another source for those! It’s also been studied as a digestive aid and mood booster. Having the scent around can also aid when you have a headache. By consuming rose, the aromatic chemicals will linger in the back of the throat and could help relieve some of the headache!

To help with the flavor I added a good amount of ground cardamom to the cookies with the rose. I love cardamom and really everyone should be using it more. I have noticed more places and chefs using it but it has a lot of great benefits as well so it’s amazing to use in food. The flavor is a bit floral with a mix of spiciness. I love adding it to my coffee in the morning. Just some of cardamoms benefits include helping fight cavities, could help lower blood pressure, anti-inflammatory properties could protect from chronic illnesses, and could even lower blood sugar! The potential in plants in incredible and learning more about them and their affects could make new ways in medicine.

Since rose is a highly floral flavor I really wanted something to help break that down a bit more than the cardamom could. That’s where the nice jam sandwich comes in. Rose goes great with berry flavors, and I have a ton of jam I need to use up before it goes bad. I also just freaking love jam and cookies together. There’s something about a melt in the mouth cookie that then releases a ton of flavor from a jam in the middle that I can’t get enough. I will 100% admit that I probably ate all these cookies myself because I couldn’t get enough! So let’s dive into this recipe.

Rose Cardamom Sandwich Cookies

135g Granulated Sugar

265g Unsalted Butter, soft

1 ea. Egg

400g All Purpose Flour

1 tsp Ground Cardamom

2 tsp Rose Water

100g Granulated Sugar

3-4 ea. Dried Rose Buds

1-2 oz. Berry Jam (I used raspberry but any berry works!)

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the butter, sugar, and cardamom until light and fluffy.

  2. Add the egg and rose water and beat until smooth.

  3. Add the flour and beat until a dough forms.

  4. Roll into a log and wrap with parchment. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

  5. While dough is chilling, in a food processor, grind the rose buds with the second sugar until broken down completely.

  6. Cut cookies into ⅛ inch slices and place on a lined sheet pan. Sprinkle with rose sugar.

  7. Bake at 350F until the edges are barely browned. Sandwich with raspberry jam once cooled.
